Call me Russ L

Ready, Made, Go

His Holiness Matt issued the order – I was to attend a gig with him and ‘Chelle on Saturday the 30th at The Jug Of Ale, featuring the new band of Dan Dan The Musical/Unemployed Man (erstwhile of wonderful Project 7. I was sad to learn that they are no more) – The Readymades.

A ride in Matt’s shiny motorcar removed the intervening space between ‘here’ and ‘there’ (it’s clever how that works, ayit) and we arrived in the nick of time, with The Readymades just starting. They play very pretty folk-rock, which so far seems to come across a bit better recorded than live (click that link, the songs are lovely) but was still very nice at the gig. Soothing, even. One song with a bit of a hard-grooving bassline suggested they might have a few more strings to their bow, too.

I found Long Day Gone a bit on the dull side. Mostly fast pop rock (they reminded me a touch of 3 Colours Red), but without songs that stuck in the mind and with a singer with an annoyingly screechy high voice. Bags of energy, though, to be fair to them.

Licquid were a game of several halves. Their first song was a druggy, indolent, Black Rebel Motor Club-ish affair; they then transformed into a big wholesome-sounding-but-with-the-slightest-hint-of-a-dark-air melodic rock band type thing, including covers of Depeche Mode and The Cure. The former of those then set the tone for the keyboard heavy last song. They weren’t bad; not amazing, either, but definitely not bad. Some strange little mannerisms from a couple of them added… well, something, anyway.

    Hey Russ!

Yeah sorry I didn’t really say hello… Never could drag Matt out in Moseley and now he drives 30 mins and I miss ya both!

You’re going to the gig on Friday though I see – that’s gonna be a cracker! My housemate Steve’s in the Gravity Crisis – they’re definitely on their way to bigger things.

    Catch ya later!

I had a feeling that describing you like that would lead to you leaving a comment.

Matt is… Matt, bless him. He works long hours.

I’m not sure if I’m definitely going on Friday or not, yet. We’ll see. I should really be conserving a bit of money for this foolishness.
