Friday the 10th saw me head on up to Walsall Bescot stadium, for a boxing card in one of the suites. There were four fights on the bill, of which I found the first and third the most interesting.

To begin with we had Telford’s Shaun ‘Slasher’ Walton vs the debuting Andrew Davies of South Wales, the latter putting in a great performance for his first professional match. Shaun couldn’t seem to find a rhythm and ate hard shots throughout the fight. Andy did look absolutely knackered after six exciting two minute rounds, and so improving his conditioning could well be a valuable lesson to learn from this one, but he’s definitely a name to watch out for. I agreed with the ref in giving all six rounds to him.

That bout also saw an addition to The Great Heckles Of Our Times. There seemed to be quite a few Telfordians in the crowd (I don’t know if there was a coach trip or whatever-have-you), and Shaun Walton got a fair bit of vocal support. Amongst the massed cries of “Knock him out Shaun!” “Knock him out!” “Knock him out Slasher!” “Knock him out son!” etc, one voice shouted forth “Win on points lad!”

Cracked me up, anyway.

Second up was the surprisingly even fight between Martin Gethin from Walsall and Carl Allen of Wolverhampton, which surprised me given how good Gethin looked last time I saw him and given Allen’s 18-47-5 record beforehand. I suppose the fact that a win-loss record doesn’t tell you everything about a fighter is one always worth re-learning. I’d got it even at 39-39 after four three minute rounds, but the ref said 40-38 to Martin.

The most exciting fight of the night saw Walsall’s Matty ‘Too Hot’ Hough (accompanied on entering by his customary two ladyfriends who don’t wear much) pitted against Coventry’s debuting John Ruddock. Ruddock was strong, pushing Matt around in the clinches and not afraid to play rough either (throwing Hough over his hip at one point. I don’t know if he has a judo background). On the other hand he didn’t seem to have too great balance, slipping on a couple of occasions and looking unsteady on quite a few others. I only had him winning one round, but he gave Hough a lot of trouble and problems to solve at beginning. As time went on, though, Matty was able to get to boxing, and his better conditioning came into play. The ref wasn’t too quick to break clinches until the last fight, which is a shame in a way ‘cos I think Matt could have stopped John if there wasn’t as much time wasted by holding in the last couple of rounds. I can’t remember what points the ref gave, but I called it 59-55. Or 54, if a point was officially taken off for the throw. Cracking fight, whichever way up.

Our main event, then, for the vacant Midlands Area welterweight strap (the first boxing title match I’ve seen live, fact fans) – Stuart Elwell of Darlaston vs David Kirk of Telford. With Darlaston only being down the road a bit and the abovementioned complement of punters from Telford, both boxers had a lot of very loud support. Lots of voices were really getting behind their man throughout, which really adds to the atmosphere. The match had a cautious start to begin with, unsurprisingly given that it was a ten rounder. To begin with Elwell was getting the upper hand with some neat and tidy boxing, but Kirk got back into it by means of working better on the inside. As the fight wore on, though, Elwell started to fight more effectively close-up. It looked pretty even for most of the bout, but towards the last few rounds it became clear that Stu was our new champ. The official score from the referee was 98-94, while I had it 96-94.

Y’see! I can remember a little bit about the fights if there aren’t very many of them!

Sorry boss, just messing about. Matt Hough is ace, though.

While we’re on the subject, does anyone know when the next boxing card in Walsall actually is? I’ve got 26th of May at the Town Hall in my head for some reason, but it’s not on Britishboxing.net yet.

I do wish these things were better advertised.

  12. Russ L said, on 9 October, 2006 at 8:58 pm

    I was there (click).

If anyone wants to flog me tickets for future West Mids cards, by the way, get in touch (not either of the ones on the 26th, I can’t make those). I usually pay on the door but I’d much rather help the fighters shift their allocation if I can.

yeh seen both his fights got a bit carried away in his first 1beating birmingham’s jo mitchell but looked alot better in his second fight against kristian laight looked alot more relaxed and composed picking his shots alot better and looked more comfortable doing six rounds as opposed to 3 in his amateur days he’s a very hard trainer and dedicated lad a very good prospect and exciting fighter.

Just thought i’d leave a message to say Darren Gethin won the British Masters light middleweight title at the Holiday Inn, Birmingham last night. Good fight and Darren was a worthy winner. Report will be on BBN later today.

  51. Eye Candy said, on 13 December, 2006 at 12:04 am

Just thought i’d pop in an see what you lads have been talkin about an i noticed my name has been mentioned!I have been a bit busy lately,u no how it is.Unfortunately the last fight i managed 2 get 2 was on the 5th december when martin gethin won his belt, but i did make it 2 the boxers christmas crack on the 8th at dunstall which was quite a good night.Anyway, speak soon x

  52. WolvesLad said, on 13 December, 2006 at 9:06 pm

Yo eyecandy, can u send me an email plse ?!?!? Really pleased that Daz won the belt to make it a family double after Martin won the previous week ! Putting Walsall on the boxing map ! Nice 1

  53. jonjo finnegan said, on 14 December, 2006 at 12:23 am

yes i was at both daz’s and martin’s title fights im pleased for them both two top lads and a good crack in the gym very good achievment i agree with you tom daz defo won the fight dont know what the fuss was about me loydy and galer all had him a winner then again they even made a fuss when matty knocked him spark out in the sixth round so it was expected.good report on my last fight tom carnt wait for the tidman fight thats my belt.

  54. Russ L said, on 14 December, 2006 at 8:58 am

It’d be ace if Steve Gethin could get a belt too. A family triple, imagine that.

Are there any more local cards before February, or is Dudley on the 15th the soonest?

  55. Tom Podmore said, on 14 December, 2006 at 9:02 am

On reflection, i probably had Darren a wider winner than i put down – i had Darren winning the first six. I’m looking forward to your fight with Tidman, Jonjo, should be a real belter – bring the second Midland Area title to Burton :)

  56. Tom Podmore said, on 14 December, 2006 at 9:06 am

Steve can’t get a title shot – they tried to arrange a Masters shot earlier in the year, but it was turned down (apparently he’s lost too many in a row, which is fair enough). The boxing season will take a break until late Jan, so Dudley is likely to be the next card.

  57. jonjo finnegan said, on 15 December, 2006 at 6:31 pm

yeh it will be tom who do you reckon mate me or tidman?

  58. WolvesLad said, on 15 December, 2006 at 8:01 pm

Jonjo, i reckon you mate ! Tom, as for Darren winning other night that puts paid to your ‘brummies better than yamyams ‘ theory ! No seriously, its good to see so many midland boxers doing so well !

  59. Wolves Boi said, on 16 December, 2006 at 8:55 pm

You’ll beat Tidman, Jonjo. I’ve seen both of you fight on several occasions and your by far the better technician. Neil can bang, and is rough on the inside, but does tend to walk in straight lines.

I’m looking forward to it – i’ll contact you nearer the time and do an interview for the site.

  75. jonjo finnegan said, on 15 January, 2007 at 1:01 am

alright everyone just popped in to say make sure your tuned in to lee’s fight next thursday night on sky sports 1 (young mutley) ive trained and spared with him for his last three fights and he was razor sharp and super fit and determined for jennings when he won the british title i was that confident he’d win that fight i put £200 on him as i trained and spared with him from start to finish with him for that fight as i did for the anderson fight but ive never seen him as sharp focused and ready b4 as he is for this fight we were in the gym this morning and by 11.30am he had run 7miles done 8 rounds sparing at a very fast pace then errol pushed him hard at the end and he finished off with 12 rounds pad work at the end at a rapid pace and he was still pushing and banging hard right at the end he looks razor ive trained with alot of very good fighters and champions but he’s took it to a different level for this fight and means serious buissness and imo we will have a new european champion next thursday night (branco is in for a shock if he’s underestimated the mutt)he’s a massive inspiration to me and young fighters can only be inspired and learn of such a warrior.

  76. jonjo finnegan said, on 15 January, 2007 at 1:06 am

fair play to him as he was only supposed to be boxing an 8 rounder against a journey man on this bill but trained for a title fight as we had a feeling this would happen.cnt wait for my title fight either wanting it bad now.

  77. WolvesLad said, on 15 January, 2007 at 5:05 pm

Good luck to the Mutt and thanks for letting us know bout him ! Glad hes inspiring the others too !

  78. Tom Podmore said, on 16 January, 2007 at 10:04 am

Cheers for that, Jonjo. I’ve used what you’ve said on here on my “Mutley To Fight For European Title” piece.

Glad to hear everything is going well in training. I’m looking forward to March 3 and I’m adamant you’ll batter Tidman. As I’ve said before, he is a rough and tough fighter but you’re by far the better technician.

The preview for the fight, by the way, will be up at the start of March.

  79. jonjo finnegan said, on 16 January, 2007 at 4:43 pm

yeh just had a look at that write up tom very good mate and looking forward to seeing my fight preview thanks for having confidence in me mate.

  80. WolvesLad said, on 16 January, 2007 at 8:44 pm

  81. jonjo finnegan said, on 16 January, 2007 at 11:26 pm

alright tom that piece u done on lee (mutley)has gone missing of the site just wondered why it was took off mate.

  82. Russ L said, on 17 January, 2007 at 6:27 am

That’s why I couldn’t find it. I thought I was being thick but couldn’t work out how.

Good luck to Mut. Sounds like he won’t need it, though.

  83. Tom Podmore said, on 18 January, 2007 at 8:59 am

It’s been taken down because Jon Wish, who is the matchmaker for Matchroom, told me it is no longer happening. He claims that the fight has been re-scheduled for March or April.

  84. Eye Candy said, on 18 January, 2007 at 9:21 pm

Hi wolves lad,iv got a few favourite boxers,i like the local ones like young mutley an matty hough an the gethin’s,im actually flying out 2 italy next wednesday 2 watch mutt’s fight on thursday!!By the way i dont support wolves,i cant stand football!Im lookin 4ward 2 your fight 2 Jonjo.I’l be there watchin u! 85. jonjo finnegan said, on 18 January, 2007 at 10:50 pm

thanks for that eye candy ur proper into your boxing arnt ya!there was 200 going to watch lee in italy but whats happening now the title fight is off?avent had chance to speak to errol or lee today.cheers for coming to the show to watch me on march 3rd.

  86. Tom Podmore said, on 19 January, 2007 at 9:06 am

To all it may concern: i’ve been told that Mutley will still fight in Italy but it will be in a six or eight-rounder. Big shame for Mutley but he’ll get his chance at Bami or Branco at some point.

Neil Tidman has been shouting his mouth off in the local press around here, Jonjo, and claims he’ll win the title with ease. Let’s see if he is good as he says he is. I believe that he’ll be outboxed and intimidated by the cauldron like atmosphere at the Meadowside.

  87. Tom Podmore said, on 19 January, 2007 at 10:14 am

By the way, Jonjo, i saw you got pulled up on Regulation 25 at the British Boxing Board of Control’s (BBBofC) last meeting. Why is that? What have you done to be warned about future condcut?

  88. jonjo finnegan said, on 19 January, 2007 at 3:05 pm

alright tom yes i did get pulled mate it was bassically just a big miss understanding i’ll tell you the story when we speak mate i spoke to matt bozeatt about it yesterday.yes errol told me about the situation with lee he’s just gota keep his chin up and go over there and impress cus like you say he will get his chance soon as for tidman i respect him as a fighter but as for him saying he will win the title with ease i know different to that and i know he wont im feeling the strongest ive ever felt in my life and also the sharpest and will def be the fittest im glad neil intends on bringing me a tough test come march 3rd and thats exactley what i need right now at this point in my career but if he’s over confident of beating me and thinks its going to be a walk in the park he’s in for a big shock and will soon get shot back down to earth i dont like to talk fights i like to fight fights and thats exactley what im going to do my talking in the ring on the night i was a midland aba senior champion as an amateur and i will be midland area champion as a pro there’s alot more in my armoury that has not been seen yet but 1 thing is for sure all will be revieled on saturday march 3rd the sparing in the gym is top class with the likes of young mutley, matty hough, conroy mcintosh, mark loyd, matt galer.the list of fighters i spar is endless and my training routine is intense and tough and im learning all the time as errol’s knoledge of the game is second to none domestically in my oppinion.between me and matt (galer)we will also have 900 fans supporting us and shouting us on as i always sell between 3 and 5 hundred tickects so i all in all the fight carnt come around quick enough for me infact i dont think ive bin so excited and up for a fight this much in my life.

  91. jonjo finnegan said, on 21 January, 2007 at 3:36 pm

yeh fair play to you there you ever thought about having a go at it or doing a bit of training?weve got our first female pro making her debut in feb at the dudley show lyndsey scragg her name is she’s a tough girl.i would of been in italy myself but its to close to my fight and would of interfered with my training and diet maybe next time thow should be a great trip for every 1 going im predicting a second round ko stoppage for the mutt next thursday.

  92. Eye Candy said, on 22 January, 2007 at 10:10 pm

I have actually thought about it,i dont think i would wanna go pro but i’d like 2 do a bit of training, cant see myself doin it though!Iv heard about lyndsey scragg through Errol,iv only ever seen 1 female pro fight but i wasnt 2 keen on it,i dont think it suits women unless they’ve got that lesbian look.

  96. Russ L said, on 23 January, 2007 at 7:08 pm

Bleeding hell. If you don’t want to sound sexist it’s probably best not to say sexist things.

Good luck to Lyndsey. Sounds like she’s got a lot of crap to overcome on top of having to win her fight.

  97. jonjo finnegan said, on 24 January, 2007 at 12:54 am

It’s good to hear you’ve had good sparring at Wednesbury, Jonjo. I’ll give you a call early Feb and see what you’ve got to say ahead of the big night at the Meadowside.

As said previously, i think you’ll beat Tidman.

By the way, any news on Galer’s opponent yet? I know you said to me in Nottingham that they were strugling to find anyone to defend his title against.

Jonjo, i will be calling you at sometime this week as i’m getting some credit again. If you see 07933025133 pop up then thats me.

yeh matty has got ambler and sam orton has got pearson ive beat them both sure these boys will do the same.

  117. Tom Podmore said, on 14 February, 2007 at 9:06 am

Your fight with Ambler was a real barnstormer. Ambler is much better than his record would suggest.

I’ll come over and speak with you in Dudley, Jonjo, so i can then get your views on the Tidman fight, etc.

I have meant to phone but i’m having a cash flow problem at the moment and can’t get any credit.

  118. Russ L said, on 14 February, 2007 at 7:45 pm

Woah, woah, woah – Matty Macklin is off the Aston 23rd card? That can’t be good for ticket sales.

I’m really looking forward to tomorrow, anyway. The only bugger for me is that I’m working till eight (in Walsall), so with a seven fight card I’m bound to miss at least one. Bah.

  119. WolvesLad said, on 14 February, 2007 at 9:57 pm

Whats this about matty macklin ?!?!?!? and Russ where in Walsall do u work mate? This is an excellent little message board by the way !! ha ha

  120. jonjo finnegan said, on 14 February, 2007 at 11:44 pm

macklin gota chest infection and wont be fit to box so he’s off the bill massive loss in ticket sales 4 sure cello rendre takes his spot tom if you dnt get chance to speak 2moz mate i’ll ring you mate also matty hough is boxing nicky taylor now.

  121. Tom Podmore said, on 15 February, 2007 at 9:16 am

Yeah, Matt told me last week that he wasn’t feeling too clever. Ken and Louis arent too worried about the tickets sales, as most of Macklin’s mob will still come down and the rest of the undercard fighters can shift a few tickets.

Cheers for that, Jonjo, its much appreciated.

  122. jonjo finnegan said, on 15 February, 2007 at 2:25 pm

    no probs m8

  123. Russ L said, on 16 February, 2007 at 11:00 am

Great fun last night, I’ll write some longer nonsense later but well done to all. I’m gutted for Matty.

I missed the first two fights (although I’ve seen the results) – how did they look?

Andy – I work for The Pension Service on Lower Hall Lane.

Also, going back a bit up the thread (I’m slow and this has only just dawned on me) – why was Martin Gethin stripped of the light-welter title, if it’s being fought for in Coventry?

  124. Tom Podmore said, on 16 February, 2007 at 12:41 pm

Russ, Rob Kenney deserved the win over Peter Dunn, but he isnt going anywhere. Rob is too straight backed and flat-footed but good luck to him.

Scragg, however, looks the real deal. She gave the Frenchwoman a real beating.

As for Hough, he needs to start fighting people who aren’t outweighing him. Both Mcintosh and Taylor had significant weight advantages and its ovbious Matty’s no light-heavyweight – as Mcintosh and Taylor are

I feel for him, but good look to Nicky, who lost to Lee Jones on Lee’s debut.

My report will be up on BBN later today.

Martin never held the Midland Area title, byt the way, he held the British Masters strap. The Midland Area belt was held by Dean Hickman, who relinquished it to fight Scott Lawton for the English. But Scott, of course, pulled out.

  125. Russ L said, on 16 February, 2007 at 2:27 pm

Ahhhhhhh. I see. I get confused with all these different titles. Cheers for the info, though.

Was the Matty Hough fight at light-heavy, then? Or do you just mean in terms of natural weight before/after cutting? As great a boxer as he is (and I really think he is, quite apart from the fact that I find him great to watch) he’s never really looked particularly heavy-handed, even at super-middle. I’ve got to give Nicky Taylor the salute for cutting the ring off and forcing him back into the corners so frequently. Exactly the right strategy.

Tom, I bet you’d know if anyone would – I heard (and quite possibly misunderstood) a vague thing about Rob Norton fighting somewhere next month. Is that right?

  126. Tom Podmore said, on 16 February, 2007 at 2:43 pm

Hough’s fight was at light-heavyweight but Taylor, as mentioned in my report, had a considerable amount of weight on him.

Taylor weighed in 12st 9lbs (light-heavy limit starts at 12’7) and Hough weighed in at 12st 3 1/4lbs. That is quite an advantage when you have little power to speak of. So, in truth, it was a light-heavyweight versus a super-middleweight.

Not fair? However, Hough probably looked at his record, 1-8-1 (0) entering, and probably thought it was worth the risk.

You’re right, though, Hough hasn’t any power to speak of. That’s not the end of the world, but against naturally bigger fighters you’re always going to struggle. Taylor has always been a tenacious so and always comes to fight.

Yes, Rob Norton fights on March 2 at the Coventry Sports Centre on Fairfax Street, Coventry. He will fight Tommy Eastwood for the vacant English cruiserweight title. And one of my favourite fighters of the past, Richie ‘The Tiger’ Evatt, makes his comeback.

  127. Russ L said, on 16 February, 2007 at 4:14 pm

Taylor did look noticeable bigger. Presumably, too, Hough’s walking-around weight was a lot closer to what he weighed in at than Taylor’s was.

Ah well. It’s all lessons to be learned from, I suppose. I hope he bounces back, since (as I’ve said a few times before) I love to watch him box.

  128. WolvesLad said, on 16 February, 2007 at 5:47 pm

Russ, ive got his number as he loves by me and ive texted him a few times today to offer my support. He feels he let us fans down but i told him nonsense. He wants to come back and i will keep u informed. iI’ll tell him what u saud Russ.

  129. Eye-Candy said, on 16 February, 2007 at 7:04 pm

Aaarr poor matty,i feel 4 him,was it just me or did that nicky actually ‘look’ a bit heavier?Thats what i thought anyway.Lyndsey scragg’s fight was good aswel,i thought she looked wicked!Who’s goin 2 the fight on march 3rd? x

  130. WolvesLad said, on 16 February, 2007 at 7:09 pm

Eye candy, was that you carrying the cards between rounds last night ?!?!?

  131. Tom Podmore said, on 16 February, 2007 at 7:09 pm

I’ll be there covering for BBN. It promises to be a good night. Both Jonjo and Galer have real tests, but they can both pass them if they fight to their potential.

There is always an excellent atmosphere at the Meadowside.

  132. Russ L said, on 16 February, 2007 at 8:04 pm

It’s definitely worth making sure that Matty knows we fans aren’t disappointed with him. It’s only a defeat if that’s the way he chooses to see it. Otherwise it’s just something to learn from.

I wrote some crap here. Tom’s is more worth reading, though.

  133. WolvesLad said, on 17 February, 2007 at 12:41 pm

  153. jonjo finnegan said, on 21 February, 2007 at 12:31 am

no probs tom.training is going well thanks im feeling sharp and fit and the weight is good should be a good night eye candy think ive done nearly 400 tickets now be some atmosphere in there on the night.

  154. Tom Podmore said, on 21 February, 2007 at 10:03 am

Galer’s fight has the potential to be explosive. I’ve seen Salari fight a couple of times, he fought on the same night you fought Dave Pearson in Nottingham back in January 2006, Jonjo, when Manoo took out Martin Concepcion in two. I also saw him draw with Simon Sherrington, and we all know what Galer did to Sherrington….

I am correct in thinking they are soon to demolish the Meadowside Leisure Centre, Jonjo? As i was told they were.

  155. jonjo finnegan said, on 21 February, 2007 at 2:06 pm

yeh should be a good fight matt will win as he is very durable and takes a great shot and will take everything manoo throws at him and i also think that matt will be better over the distance and manoo wnt be able to take galer’s power in the late rounds when it gets hard in there should salari of beat sherrington in your oppinion tom?yes there’s talk of them demolishing it tom and swaping places with a tesco its not 100%yet thow mate.

  156. Tom Podmore said, on 21 February, 2007 at 6:49 pm

That would be a travesty if it was knocked down for a f’in supermarket.

Yes, i thought Salari beat Sherrington, but it was close. Sherrington was more in that fight than he was against Mr Galer, who took him to school in one of the most exciting fights i’ve seen, as you know!

I reckon it wll be a succesful night for the Burton boys with you and Galer winning.

  157. Eye-Candy said, on 22 February, 2007 at 9:20 pm

  168. Tom Podmore said, on 4 March, 2007 at 10:32 am

Fair play to you Jonjo. I thought you won a couple of sessions and the 100-92 was a tad unfair.

I thought that Tidman’s main strength was his strength. Keep plugging on and you’ll get that title yet.

  169. jonjo finnegan said, on 4 March, 2007 at 11:13 am

tom errol has just sighned two very good lads from burton who boxed out of my old amateur gym burton abc there both lads who ive helped out and worked with since they were kids and both have 70 odd amateur bouts and both have won national titles they told me that they wanted to turn over and they both was impressed with how i had done so far in my career and asked if i would take them to errols gym so they have been over and done some training and sparing and errol has liked what he’s c’n with both of them and they have sighned with him tonight would it be possible to run a story on the to lads turning pro on the site tom?they will both be great additions to the next burton show.

  187. Tom Podmore said, on 22 March, 2007 at 9:09 am

Of course, Jonjo. If you give me the details of who they are, what weight they will fight at, how many amateur fights they had (how many they won), what titles they, any other info, etc, i’ll knock something up. When i get the names i’ll be able to get most of the info from my amateur contacts.

  188. jonjo finnegan said, on 22 March, 2007 at 4:24 pm

  193. WolvesLad said, on 24 March, 2007 at 12:57 pm

Congratulations to Darren Gethin who beat Tyan Booth last night . Sensational knock out and entertaining fight. Ive spoke to him this morning and hes made up ! Stu obviously is not as happy but ive told him he can learn from last night and that 97-94 is not to be ashamed of and he has my respect for getting in the ring in the 1st place, never mind lasting the distance !

  194. Tom Podmore said, on 24 March, 2007 at 2:06 pm

Jonjo – no probs on both counts. Will your fight with Rock be over in Ireland? I’ll try and make the trip if it is. I did briefly see you last night when the action wrapped up but just as i was going to come over my phone rang!

Great for Darren last night, he gave Tyan a proper battering!! As for Stu, i scored the fight 96-95 to O’Donnell, as did a few others, and he can come again. O’Donnell is much better than i gave him credit for. A special prospect.

  198. Tom Podmore said, on 26 March, 2007 at 5:27 pm

Jonjo, i’m back from Dublin and got to say first i was so chuffed for Bernard Dunne last night. As a second generation Irishman, its great to have a European champion from the capital.

Jim Rock looked good last night, although i have seen him fight on the tele in the past, this was the first time i’d seen him fight live. On first glance, you’d say he was a puncher with the shot he finished off his opponent with but the kid had been stopped seven times in eight losses.

Rock seems to be slowing down a bit, Jonjo – i reckon if you jab and then switch attack to his body he’ll fall. He has always been a good stylist, but watch out for his shots to the body, he hits there hard. In fact, Peter Jackson was taken out by thumping hooks to the body. I’m sure you’ve spoken to Matt Galer about him too.

I can get his fight with Takaloo on dvd for you, if you want? I remember seeing that at the time, early 2003 as i remember, and he was doing well for seven rounds before Tak finished the job a couple of rounds later.

My report if anyone is interested: http://www.britishboxing.net/news_2205-Dunne-bandwagon-picks-up-pace.html

  199. Russ L said, on 26 March, 2007 at 10:29 pm

Sounds like Daz Gethin was amazing, judging by your article.

If folks here know about Irish boxing then I’ll ask this just out of curiosity – does anyone remember Damien Dempsey from Dublin? He does music (and I love his stuff) now, but apparently he was once well-regarded as an amateur a few years ago. Anyone ever seen him box?

  200. Tom Podmore said, on 27 March, 2007 at 9:12 am

I’ve never seen Mr Dempsey box, but i remember reading about him in Boxing News when i was a lad.

I’ve see that he claims he was a National Junior champion in Ireland, which isn’t true. I checked on the list i have of all the National Sr and Jr champions (at amateur level) from Ireland and his name isnt on it.

It would be like me saying i was an ABA champion when i didnt reach a Midland ABA final, although i did get to the semi-finals of the Midland Zone Juniors when i was 16 – its it one of the May 2001 issues of Boxing News :)

  201. Russ L said, on 27 March, 2007 at 1:50 pm

    Blimey.

I think I might declare myself a champion, then.

  202. jonjo finnegan said, on 27 March, 2007 at 4:42 pm

oh yeh twinkle i remember you your the police lady who sat next to us at the froch fight arnt you?r u o.k and did yoiu av a good night?

  203. jonjo finnegan said, on 27 March, 2007 at 4:49 pm

thanks for that tom i watched the fight on rte 2 and although rock looked good the other kid did’nt realy want to know he hardly threw back the shot looked like it landed high on the temple that finished the kid.them body shots he throws do look dangerous and i’ll make sure im nice and solid as always for them ive gota get myself in top shape and take my chance jim is a good experienced fighter and i will give it 100% i think he is more a sharp puncher than a realy hard puncher and also looks very fit.tom i never knew you boxed mate how many did you have and which club did you box for?

  204. twinkle said, on 27 March, 2007 at 5:41 pm

Jonjo, Yea had a good night, few too many beers though as you do!!! A bit disapointed by the early finish in the fight though, oh well!!
did you go out in Notts?
    K

  205. Tom Podmore said, on 27 March, 2007 at 5:42 pm

I’m probably coming over and covering your fight, Jonjo. If i can get the same priced flight over from Brum i will. I agree with everything you say about Rock, though. You will be the last man to box him, he’s retiring after the fight.

Yes, i boxed on 22 occasions and won 14 of them. I had spell at Broad Plain ABC in Bristol, where my family lived for a few years, and Birmingham Irish ABC. I had to give it up, though – i became an insulin dependent diabetic.

I’m not just saying this, but i was too agressive for amateur boxing. I liked to have a scrap, and still do, but its about being light on your feet and tippy-tappy boxing, which i could do but didnt really want to!

  206. Tom Podmore said, on 29 March, 2007 at 9:00 am

Jonjo, are you boxing on the undercard of Bernard Dunne’s next fight on May 19? If so, im defintley going over as i’ve just booked my flight.

  207. jonjo finnegan said, on 29 March, 2007 at 6:52 pm

  215. Tom Podmore said, on 30 March, 2007 at 9:57 am

Jonjo, i think either Carl or Duane may have called me last night because i had a missed call off a mobile at around 9pm. I went to look at the number and i deleted it – prat that i am. Anyway, if you want to tell the lads im avaliable to be called at anytime i’ll make sure im with my phone!

I’m not just saying this because i speak to you, but i think you’ll beat Tidman in a rematch, if there is one. He is fighting for the British Masters title against Ryan Walls on the 14th, i reckon Neil will win that.

  216. jonjo finnegan said, on 30 March, 2007 at 6:00 pm

yeh i think he will beat walls to tom is that the 14th aprill mate do you know where its at?yes mate i’ll tell the lads to ring you then mate if
he does win id love to fight him for both them titles just feel like i never did myself justice that night mate and i dont realy like him much as a person either although he aint a bad fighter not as good as he thinks he is thow but no disrespect to him he did the job against me.

  217. Tom Podmore said, on 31 March, 2007 at 8:15 am

Its at the Bracknell Leisure Centre on Saturday April 14. I think its a ‘Gypsy’ George Carmen promotion. Walls isn’t a bad fighter when he is in the mood, and he’s a bit of a banger, but he has never fought very well when he is under pressure. Tidman will always be on his chest and in his face.

Carl rang me yesterday afternoon, nice kid. I think him and Duane have made the right decsion in signing for Errol. Said they might stick him on the Froch bill in July.

  218. jonjo finnegan said, on 4 April, 2007 at 2:17 pm

yes carl and duane both nice kids tom carl is a right card in the gym very confident lad which is a good thing mate think there on about putting the dublin show back tom did you hear anything mate?

  219. jonjo finnegan said, on 4 April, 2007 at 2:18 pm

sorry twinkle cnt e mail at the min thats why i havent got back to you.

  220. Tom Podmore said, on 4 April, 2007 at 6:03 pm

As i’ve just spoke to you on the phone, Jonjo, i think that Dublin issue is resolved. However, i’ll try and get hold of Bernard Dunne or Brian Peters tomorrow and see what the official line is.

But could you do me a favour? Duane said you have his e-mail address and said you’d pass it on.

  221. jonjo finnegan said, on 4 April, 2007 at 10:32 pm

thanks tom that would be great mate.yes i’ll get it off duane and put it on here mate he was very nervous about speaking to you he’s a quiet sort of lad errol was very pleased with him in the gym tonight he looked great sparing he’s not timid at all in there lol!

  222. Tom Podmore said, on 5 April, 2007 at 10:54 am

I was probably more nervous than he was! I’m always nervous when i speak to anyone. I’m looking forward to seeing the lads in action, and its good they are making their bows before the end of the season. As you said earlier, they will make great additions to the undercard in Burton.

I’ll probably come down the gym in the next week or two – i want to speak to Dean Hickman before his British title eliminator in Dudley – so hopefully i’ll get to see Duane and Carl sparring.

  223. jonjo finnegan said, on 5 April, 2007 at 1:05 pm

yeh good stuff tom dean boxing dave stewart now should be a cracker especially now we got the telly there dean and duane had a good spar last night.

  224. Tom Podmore said, on 5 April, 2007 at 1:10 pm

You cant get better sparring than at Errol’s gym. People like Dean Hickman, Dean Harrison, Young Mutley, etc, will bring on Carl and Duane loads.

Hickman-Stewart is going to be very intruging. If Dean can bring his power and strength down to lightweight, he’ll stop Stewart. Meager stopped Dave, and he cant hit as hard as Hickman.

  225. jonjo finnegan said, on 6 April, 2007 at 1:35 pm

    i agree mate defo.

    how did tidman do tom?

  229. Tom Podmore said, on 16 April, 2007 at 8:34 am

The card was cancelled about a week and-a-half ago.

Tidman had sold all his tickets but Walls hadnt shifted any so the whole show was called off. I know that Pat Cowdell is trying to get the fight up here in the next couple of months.

Have you heard anymore about the Dublin card yet, Jonjo?

  230. WolvesLad said, on 16 April, 2007 at 7:39 pm

  236. jonjo finnegan said, on 17 April, 2007 at 11:52 am

    o.k thanks alot wolves lad.

  237. Tom Podmore said, on 17 April, 2007 at 12:08 pm

    Excellent, i’ll re-arrange my flight.

I reckon that Dean will beat him again. Both have improved, and Reid has had some brilliant results in the last year or so, but Hickman is the better all-round fighter. Reid relies too much on his body-work. That said, he only needs to land one and its over.

Hickman on points, although he hits so hard i wouldnt be suprised to see a late stoppage. Be a cracker. I remember being in the crowd for the first one when Dean had to get off the floor from a bodyshot in the first.

  238. jonjo finnegan said, on 18 April, 2007 at 10:13 pm

  239. Tom Podmore said, on 19 April, 2007 at 8:22 am

I’ve text you Jonjo, but in case you didnt get it: Tidman lost 40-36 to Joey Vegas last night. Kev, the site owner, was there and a report will be up later.

I’ve seen Vegas before and he is a class act.

    Russ:

    D Mitchell vs Tye Williams – 8×2
Tommy Costello vs Deniss Sirjatovs – 4×3
Max Maxwell vs Matt Scriven – 4×3
Jimmy McKinley vs Jon Foster – 6×2
Ben Murphy vs Barry Downs – 4×3
Craig Johnson vs Sergei Rozhakmens – 6×3.

Jonjo, Tidman didnt fight. Ricky Strike took his place and was stopped in three.

  250. Russ L said, on 28 April, 2007 at 7:50 am

    Cheers Tom.

I don’t recall ever having personally seen an 8×2 in boxing before.

  251. Tom Podmore said, on 28 April, 2007 at 8:08 am

By the way, Craig’s fight is a six-twos not a six-threes as i have put up there. A slip on the keyboard.

Eight-twos are used more on dinner shows, i’ve seen plenty of them. Then again, i’ve seen well over a 1,000 fights live in my 21-years on this planet. Jonjo has boxed in an eight-twos before.

  252. Russ L said, on 28 April, 2007 at 12:13 pm

That’s amazing. I could probably work out exactly how many I’ve seen live (and I might well do so when I’m bored). It wouldn’t be anywhere near a thousand…

  253. jonjo finnegan said, on 29 April, 2007 at 11:58 am

yeh funny distance 8 x 2’s seems to fly bye

maxwell could get beat by scriven today if scriven goes to win.

  254. jonjo finnegan said, on 30 April, 2007 at 1:31 pm

good show at the villa liked the variety of shots costello threw picked em nice looks a good prospect

d mitchell v daz gethin would be a good fight id prob go with daz on that 1 might just be a bit weathered gritty and stong for mitchell but could be outboxed but 10 x 3’s is a long time to keep a rash like daz of ya.

another fight fight id like to see and reckon it would be hard to pick a winner would be sam horton v jamse mckinley be a cracker that would.

i reckon we should have a contender style tournament errol’s lads v the ringside lads that would generate some publicity who could i box?

  255. Tom Podmore said, on 30 April, 2007 at 1:58 pm

Its a pick’ em. At this stage you’d have to go for Darren due to his experience, but in a few fights time who knows. D is improving with every fight and with a few more fights under his belt should be ready for an Area title fight.

James and Sam would be a brilliant fight; i’d probably lean towards Sam. McKinley would make it hard but James is only a light-middleweight, he weighed in at 10st 9lbs mid-week, and Sam is a full-middleweight. However, both love a scrap and don’t mind taking one to give one.

Again, i was thinking the same thing. You must be some kind of mind reader! Could you imagine how well that would sell? They would have to stick it on at the NEC.

There is only one fighter at Team Ringside who is around your weight – Lee Jones.

Lee is 2-0 and is an ambitious fighter. They are planning on moving him up quickly, and he fights his first six-threes in July. He beat Nicky Taylor on his debut, who then went on to stop Matty Hough, and outpointed Phil Callaghan, who drew with recent Midland Area light-heavyweight title challenger Rod Anderton.

He’s progressing well. I wouldn’t mind seeing you and Lee fight, Jonjo. You’re technically the more proficient boxer, though. And I think your extra experience would see you home comfortably.

  256. Russ L said, on 30 April, 2007 at 2:07 pm

I think Lee Jones is great but I’d definitely stick my money on Jonjo for that one, at the moment at least. I’ve only seen Lee’s last fight in terms of boxing, but I’ve seen him kickbox once in the past too and I can really imagine his tendency to showboat costing him when he’s in against a fighter who’s both good and experienced.

Good call on the Errol vs Ringside idea, though. That would be a fantastic card, with Elcock vs McDermott as a solid headliner (maybe that could even be televised). Would it realistically end up happening, though? I can imagine a lot of wrangling having to go on to get it all sorted out.

If only I was a millionaire with money to piss away, I’d put it on myself…

  257. Tom Podmore said, on 30 April, 2007 at 2:15 pm

Sadly, McDermott, although he appears on Errol and PJ’s shows, is a Frank Warren-promoted, Dean Powell-managed fighter. He is allowed to box on PJ and Errol’s shows.

Believe me, knowing Mr Elcock like i do, he would jump at the chance to fight Darren McDermott.

The fight is probably a lot closer than people realise. After all, Eastman isnt likely to defend his British title against Wayne, and he has too because Wayne is his mandatory, leaving the two highest rated challengers to fight for it.

Darren won a British title eliminator in February…

  258. jonjo finnegan said, on 30 April, 2007 at 2:36 pm

look out for me lads im feeling my best at the min and i havent felt how im feeling at the for a while now through 1 thing and another i wana get back in there badly sooner the better looks like the rock fight is off again now but that fight will def go sooner or later yeh me and lee jones could go sumwhere down the line id be more than up for it good set up the ringside lads have got and the contender thing would be great who do you think would win mcdermott v elcock lads?mcdermott is boxing conroy next then as much as i like conroy he is made for daz only 1 winner there.

  259. jonjo finnegan said, on 30 April, 2007 at 2:41 pm

small world is’nt it d mitchell beat my girlfreinds brother in the novice championships as an amateur cracking fight his name is kevin bristow good fighter ko’d 11 out of 13 lads but had to stop boxing becouse of back probs i think my mrs takes after him she can bang a bit too i tend to walk round the house with my head guard on lol!

  260. Tom Podmore said, on 30 April, 2007 at 2:45 pm

I was about to ring you about the Rock fight. That’s a shame but your chance will come to box Rock and you’ll beat him, im confident about that.

When are you hoping to fight again, Jonjo?

Conroy can bang, so that makes him dangerous, but i’ve never seen a fighter with a workrate like Darren. Macca stops him late.

I’d lean towards Wayne, maybe a bit of bias. McDermott CAN beat Wayne but i don’t think he is ready for him yet. Look at the people Wayne has beaten Farnell, Tsarenko, Murphy, Baldassara, Rhodes, Bendall, Monaghan, etc.

Darren has beaten good men but, with the exception of Monaghan and Rhodes, his opponents have been a level below the people Wayne has fought and beat. It would be close and in 12-months time i reckon Darren would do him.

    What do you think Jonjo?

  261. jonjo finnegan said, on 30 April, 2007 at 4:07 pm

daz is 1 of them fighters that seems to up his game when he boxes and like wayne elcock realy lives the life and belives in himself think wayne could get on top of daz and be a bit strong for him and dont realy think daz has the power to stop him in his tracks and hurt him but if they ended up having a boxing match and the fight got into rounds 6 7 8 da would start to take over and outwork him on the outside so id go for elcock early or daz on points either way it would be a very interesting and good fight.

thanks for that on the rock fight tom like you say it will come m8 and wana make a statement this year whoever i box errol says im on the mutley v bami bill m8.

  262. jonjo finnegan said, on 30 April, 2007 at 4:26 pm

another interesting fight coming up is mick monaghan v tyrone wright wright is big for a light heavy but monaghan might be a step ahead of him with experience and know a bit to much for him what do you think tom?

has tidman got anything coming up?

  263. Tom Podmore said, on 1 May, 2007 at 8:11 am

Is that Mutley-Bami bill on July 20? Any idea of where its going to take place, Birmingham?

It’s an interesting fight. I’m going to it and think that Monaghan will know a bit too much for him at this stage. Wright is pretty decent but you look at the people that Monaghan has been in with and will Wright bring anything that Mick has never seen before? Wright isnt as good as Rod Anderton – and Anderton lost to Mick.

Plus Monaghan has an excellent defence and is awkward. I’m looking forward to it.

I’ve been told that Tidman will make a defence of his title in Bedworth in the next couple of months. I don’t know whom that will be against, although I heard it might be against Simeon Cover or Hamed Jamali, but I don’t know if Hamed’s been in the gym since the Renda fight.

  264. Tom Podmore said, on 1 May, 2007 at 9:02 am

I cant believe i forgot to tell you, Tidman fights on Sky Sports on May 11 at the Motherwell Leisure Centre. He is fighting 9-0-1 Stevie McGuire over eight-rounds on the undercard of Kevin Anderson-Eammon Magee.

Tidman has been told a good performance will lead him to an English title fight against Tony Dodson.

But a defence of the Area title is scheduled for July.

  265. jonjo finnegan said, on 1 May, 2007 at 5:18 pm

yes tom think that was sumwhere around the date that errol gave me for the mutley fight be a good bill to box on.

yes think your right on the monaghan v wright fight the only other factor in that fight which i think could cost mick is natural size difference as i dont think monaghan is not natural light heavy and could even do middle if he had a job that required him to as opposed to wright who has even boxed at cruiser in the past and finds it real hard to make 12st 7.so in the later rounds that could cost him but like we said before he’s bin in them later rounds alot of times b4 where as right never has so im gona go with mick on that 1 aswell also i like mick he’s a great campaighner and a true warrior

fair play to tidman these fights will only make him better and he aint ducking no 1 he’s got a hard 1 with mcguire thow good kid.but then again he drew with turba and neil would beat turba.as for hemid jamali we avent seen him since the renda fight i thought he might of moved gym’s i used to enjoy sparing him cover would be a tough nights work as he always is can bang a bit to very tricky and awkward customer but a bit fragile himself sumtimes but dnt think neil has the power to hurt him.

  266. WolvesLad said, on 1 May, 2007 at 6:45 pm

Lads i think Stu Elwell fighting on the mutley card too he told me he plans to, trying to get back up the ratings after his defeat. Jonjo i regually speak to Lee Jones so we’ll ave to arrange that fight ! lol even if its in my back yard ! Hey its a good idea tho the ringside vs pj thing, i wonder if it could be done for charity or something ?!?! good idea but i doublt if that would happen. Ive also spoke to sam horton about james mckinley and hes really up for that fight! Sams up for any fight tho and fair play to him- pair of bluenoses !

  267. Tom Podmore said, on 2 May, 2007 at 8:15 am

I was talking to Ricardo Samms the other day and he expresed an interest in fighting Tidman by the end of the year for the Area title, of course he’d have to do a six-threes first. Samms is an excellent technician.

Are you going to the Monaghan-Wright fight, Jonjo? I think Ricardo and Adie Whitmore are boxing on that card, too.

I expect Wright to charge Monaghan in the early rounds, try and cut off the ring (if you dont then you wont get a chance to hit Mick) and bomb him out of there. But Mick has a decent chin, and only Froch and Macklin have done a job on him.

  268. WolvesLad said, on 2 May, 2007 at 6:28 pm

hey tom, tell us all on here about your upcoming charity bout, sure everyone on here will come !

  269. jonjo finnegan said, on 2 May, 2007 at 6:34 pm

yeh samms is a good fighter tom i was there when he beat darren mcdermott in the midland aba final a few years ago in coventry.

yes mate i’ll be there at the monaghoan fight think adie whitmore is a good prospect aswell tom only 19 aswell the super middle division is quite hot in the midlands at the min.

yes wolves lad u can do the p.r work on the me v lee jones fight when he’s caught me up a bit id be more than happy to fight him but the fight i want the most at the min is tidman again id beat him next time but might have to weight a while now as i had my chance and blew it boxed tottaly the wrong fight thats enough of the anyway thats in the past now ans sam v mckinley would be a cracker sam is as game as they come.

  270. jonjo finnegan said, on 2 May, 2007 at 6:36 pm

whats this about your charity bout m8 i’ll be there.

  271. Tom Podmore said, on 3 May, 2007 at 8:08 am

Well, i was supposed to be doing a three-twos charity boxing match against another report, former Birmingham City captain and Birmingham Post’s sports writer Ian Clarkson. However, he has just pulled out due to family commitments (he has having a tough time with the wife).

However, we are still searching for a reporter to take his place. I feel it’s quite unfair, what with me having fought competitively before!

It hasnt been 100 per cent confirmed yet but should happen in September.

  272. Tom Podmore said, on 3 May, 2007 at 8:26 am

Your lucky, Jonjo, in the fact there are not to many Midland super-middles who have done six-threes, so he’ll have to either give you a rematch or petition the board to make you his next challenger.

Whats happening with Matt Galer? I have always been a big, big fan and was schocked when he lost to Manoo on the same bill. Is he going to fight again?

  273. Lee Jones Jr said, on 3 May, 2007 at 8:24 pm

Well well well, thanks for the support lads! Haha!
The Ringside v Errol idea sounds like its got legs to me, plenty of matches that could be made too.
McKinley would beat Sam IMHO, and I cant see Gethin beating D, D is one of those fighters who will always look beatable because he only does what he needs to to win – he has several levels yet that nobody has seen.
Russ L – im amazed at what you said about me, ive read what you have written in the past and it hasnt really been complimentary has it? And as for fighting someone decent – that guy you saw me fight in Walsall was 5-0 with 5 KOs so he wasnt bad – I was just better….and admit it you liked the showboating! haha
Jonjo – you cheeky sod ‘when he catches me up….’ its not my fault your really really really really old and im still a fresh faced young flower is it? haha – im sure it’ll happen at some point but if you cant wait theres always wolveslads back yard…..! haha
Im gonna keep an eye on you lot in future – you bloody gossips!

  274. WolvesLad said, on 3 May, 2007 at 8:36 pm

yes lads i’ll clear my yard for you ! seriously tho ive only seen you both fight once but would be a good un as would all the other possible midlands match ups. I know that Lee wants to get more fights under his belt and im sure when he ‘catches up’ with the others he will provide a good match.

  275. Russ L said, on 3 May, 2007 at 9:05 pm

Woah, hang on Lee – what have I said that hasn’t been complementary? As far as I recall, I’ve written about you twice: here (where I didn’t recall much about the fight other than your larking about) and here (where I said I thought it was close and that you had to work for it. I assume this is what you’re referring to, although I wouldn’t have thought was an insult myself). I wasn’t intending to disparage your opponent, either; perhaps in this thread I should have said ‘both as good and as experienced as Jonjo.’ I would have thought that was obvious from the context, but perhaps not.

I’m not going to deny I do find the showboating fun to watch. I’d be lying, though, if I said I didn’t think I could see it turning round to bite you on the arse one day.

I’m sorry if it sounds like I’m cussing you, though, ‘cos I have liked watching you fight both times I’ve seen you and I’d call myself a fan. I did try and email you once for tickets through the website you had that doesn’t seem to exist anymore…

  276. Lee Jones Jr said, on 3 May, 2007 at 9:18 pm

easy tiger – everything i said was in good humour and i knew what you meant.
and the not complimentary thing – i was more thinking of when you wrote something like ‘and bringing a bit of comedy to proceedings….’ but i was pleased that you remembered me really!
showboating – i dont do it on purpose it just sort of happens – it makes me feel relaxed, so as long as im winning i wont worry about changing it.
and the website has changed from http://www.leejonesjr.com to http://www.leejonesjnr.com and itll be back up in a couple of weeks – long story as to why its changed by one letter, but the new one will be better.

  277. Russ L said, on 3 May, 2007 at 9:22 pm

Cool, cool. Bringing comedy for the proceedings is a good thing as far as I’m concerned as a spectator. If you find it helps you fight, too, then fair play.

This website has now had eight hits from people searching for “Jonjo Finnegan Lee Jones” on Yahoo and AOL. Unless they were all from you lot, it looks like there might be a bit of public interest for the fight already…

  278. Lee Jones Jr said, on 3 May, 2007 at 9:31 pm

8? wow i bet thats more than have searched for oscar v floyd!

  279. Russ L said, on 3 May, 2007 at 9:36 pm

This site normally gets about two thirds of a hit per day. It’s good going by my standards.

Speaking of which – I’m saying Mayweather by decision. I’d be interested to know what the crew here think.

On that topic, I laughed at this, too.

  280. twinkle said, on 4 May, 2007 at 8:40 am

Ding Ding Round 2!!!! – keep this going its interesting!!! lmto!

  281. Tom Podmore said, on 4 May, 2007 at 9:01 am

Jonjo, any idea when Carl and Duane are making their debuts? I know that Carl was due on the Froch bill in Nottingham in July, but Froch has just had an operation and will be out until October. Duane was due to fight in Dudley.

Tell the lads that i’ll ring them nearer the time they make their debuts.

  282. Tom Podmore said, on 4 May, 2007 at 9:11 am

Oh, Floyd will beat Oscar. I dont write off Oscar, as he is the stronger man, the harder puncher (how many times has Floyd overcome that, though – Castillo, Corrales, Jesus Chavez and Zab Judah were all bigger and stronger and all ended up losing) but Floyd is class.

Little Floyd has silky skills, tremendous speed and a superb defence, plus Oscar will have been out of the ring a year.

Can Oscar pin him down if Mayweather hits him with flurries and moves out of range? I don’t think he can. This will be the win that well and truly seals Mayweather’s place in Canasota.

Floyd, for me, will be a fighter who is only truly appreciated after he hangs up the gloves, which he tries to have us believe will be after the fight. I dont think he will.

He peppers Oscar with jabs, lefts and rights and covers up expertly under attack to claim a unanimous decision.

I’ve had 250 notes on Floyd to win rounds one-to-three on Bet365 and stand to win £5,500. I’ve had a further 100 on Floyd to win on points.

  283. Tom Podmore said, on 4 May, 2007 at 9:19 am

I mean to put i had £250 on Floyd to win every round on the Harold Lederman special. Not win rounds one, two and three.

  284. WolvesLad said, on 4 May, 2007 at 9:33 pm

Going back to local boxing ive spoke to sam horton today about the prospect of boxing james mcinley. He said and i quote ‘ I’ll fight anyone anywhere, i’ll box that mcinley anytime. Id like to fight him for the midlands title when macca gives it up to go on to better things. I might be fighting Howard Clark in the june show wheich will be a good fight, i’ll have him a good one im on form. Went back to the gym after a week off and feeling good, i’ll have anyone ! ‘ – there u have it lads ! hes as game as anyone and my monies on the hitman horton ! – his pc down at mom but he assures me he’ll be on this little site as soon as he can to have his say lol ps. tom why doint you box Russ for this charity thing ? hes a boxing writer aint he ?!?! come on Russ @ be good and its for charity.

  285. Russ L said, on 5 May, 2007 at 7:50 am

I don’t think there’s any challenge for Tom there. It’s pretty safe to say that he’d knock my arse into next week as easy as he could blink.

There’s a difference between being a boxing writer and occasionally writing about boxing, anyway. I couldn’t pretend to be the first of the two.

  286. WolvesLad said, on 5 May, 2007 at 9:43 am

ok, bet you are a heavyweight anyway russ (only jokin mate ) lol

  287. Tom Podmore said, on 5 May, 2007 at 9:54 am

I’d pick Sam ‘The Man’ Horton.

I like Jimmy a lot, a really nice kid and a good, crowdpleasing fighter, but he is really only a light-middleweight. I’ve seen both lads fight Jon Foster – the common denominator – with similar results.

Horton and Foster engaged in a great fight in Brierley Hill last November. It was close early on but Sam really started to beat up Jon in the last couple of rounds. Jimmy did much the same on Sunday but was rattled a few times – as I’ve said before, James is only a light-middle and Foster has fought as high as light-heavy.

As you know Andy (WolvesLad) I will fight anyone. I really want to fight Ian Clarkson, though, as he said he was going to break my jaw (about a year ago) behind my back. Wouldn’t say it to my face, mind.

It will be good to lace the gloves on again – it’s been a while since I had to retire due to the dreaded type one diabetes.

  288. Russ L said, on 5 May, 2007 at 11:43 am

“ok, bet you are a heavyweight anyway russ”

I’m only 5′ 7″, but I’m working on it. My lager-and-kebab-based training is producing results.

  289. WolvesLad said, on 5 May, 2007 at 2:38 pm

wish you could fight that ian clarkson tom mate, i know you really want him ! hes running scared mate if you ask me ! i know you are game ! -remember that londoner from boxingrec site who u had an ongoing argument with ! box him lol

  290. jonjo finnegan said, on 5 May, 2007 at 7:54 pm

alright tom matt is not to sure what he’s doing yet mate he’s just doing his own thing at the min me personally i think he will back he is a very good fighter and has alot left in the tank.not sure of a date for duane or carl at the min tom but should’nt think either of them will be far away from making their debut.

if your stuck for a body for your charrity bout m8 just let me know and you can beat me up for a few rounds tom just let me know m8 lol!

  291. jonjo finnegan said, on 5 May, 2007 at 7:59 pm

we could have a joint top of the bill event

jonjo (2 fast) finnegan v lee jones

sam (the man) horton v jamse mckinnley.

    think it would sell well.

but thats the promotors job i suppose.

  292. Tom Podmore said, on 5 May, 2007 at 8:34 pm

I’ll bear that in mind Jonjo! I’ve had a couple of reporters lined up but when its been revealed that i’m a former amateur they start to make their excuses.

They must have remembered how deadly Tom ‘The Wizard’ Podmore was in his 1999-2004 hey-day!

  293. jonjo finnegan said, on 5 May, 2007 at 8:49 pm

no probs m8 yeh yeh there runnin from you tom just seen the weigh in for tonight oscar looks in great shape think he might be a bit big for floyd but im still not 100% sure on a winner.

im guna bite the bullet and go for mayweather.

I had it 117-113. I really can’t see how one judge had it for DLH at all, or how people are disputing the decision. The idea that Mayweather is genuinely going to retire is ridiculous too.

The difference between the speed of Mayweather and Larry Merchant’s speech was hilarious after the fight, too.

  295. wilse said, on 11 May, 2007 at 8:04 am

Jonjo, did you know that Tidman is fighting tonight on the Anderson-Magee bill in scotland?, he fights Steven Mcguire over eight 3 min rnds.

  296. jonjo finnegan said, on 11 May, 2007 at 7:05 pm

yes mate but i forgot thanks mate i’ll watch that

  297. jonjo finnegan said, on 13 May, 2007 at 2:40 pm

heard tidman was hard done by.

  298. Tom Podmore said, on 13 May, 2007 at 2:50 pm

Tidman was robbed – well, acording to one of his cornermen. McGuire is thought of highly up in Scotland and the scoreline, 79-75, was very generous.

I’ve just been speaking to Tony Dodson who said that Tidman might be fighting him for the English title in October/November.

Any news when your back in action, Jonjo?

  299. jonjo finnegan said, on 14 May, 2007 at 10:41 am

need to get back in there tom not got a definate date yet thow m8.

  300. jonjo finnegan said, on 14 May, 2007 at 10:43 am

do you know who kevin conception has got tonighgt tom?

  301. Tom Podmore said, on 14 May, 2007 at 10:51 am

I haven’t the foggiest. It was supposed to be Leon Owen but he fought on Friday night in Scotland – losing on points. I was going to phone Pat Cowdell but i’ll leave it to tonight and find out when i get to the Burlington Hotel.

I know that they have had trouble matching Kevin, such is the reputation that he has already got.

  302. jonjo finnegan said, on 14 May, 2007 at 2:05 pm

yeh i boxed kevin twice in the am’s tom i wonder if pat would let me in there tonight can you buy tickets on the door do you know tom or is it dinner’s only.

  303. Tom Podmore said, on 14 May, 2007 at 5:22 pm

Jonjo, just walk in. Seriously. Its a dinner show but just do what you did when you went and saw Darren Gethin box on one of Pat’s shows – stand at the door and watch in. You can just stroll past the security, they dont know whats going on!

Its at the Burlington Hotel on New Street in Birmingham City centre. Boxing should start at 10:30.

  304. jonjo finnegan said, on 15 May, 2007 at 5:27 pm

cheers tom yeh thats what i did m8 enjoyed it 3 good fights always love pats ring card gils aswell whats that leon owen like tom you seem him thought kev conception looked good aswell his power is coming back now me and kev spoke after the fight weve always been good m8’s and said it would’nt be nice to box each other but buisness is buisness i suppose looks like he’s more a middle than super middle he hurt phillips with a good right uppercut last night he throws that shot well.

  305. Tom Podmore said, on 15 May, 2007 at 6:13 pm

Pat’s ringcard girls are really, really hot. Leon Owen is powerful… that is literally all he has got. He is a bit chinny too; he has been down six-times whilst compiling his 3-2 (1) record.

Kevin Concepcion is a good fighter. I’ve seen him a few times, and he blew away durable Davey Jones in one in Coventry a couple of months back. Sadly, i couldnt get to the show last night. I had a bit of trouble with the ZR and had to miss it.

I was gutted as i was really looking forward to Wyatt-McCluskey II.

  306. WolvesLad said, on 19 May, 2007 at 9:52 am

  307. Tom Podmore said, on 19 May, 2007 at 3:10 pm

Should be good craic, as per. Macca will rip Conroy McIntosh to bits, though. I’m looking forward to seeing Miss Scragg fight again, she is probably the best female boxer i’ve ever seen in the flesh.

I’m looking forward to two shows im going to in Dublin in the next month and-a-half.

Are you going to either Dunne (June 23, The Point) or Duddy’s fights (July 7, National Stadium), Jonjo?

I’m looking forward to both but can’t wait to see Wayne McCullough on the Dunne undercard. Wayne is one of my all-time favourite boxers – well, apart from when he boxed Naz in ’98!

  308. Lee Jones said, on 23 May, 2007 at 8:58 pm

  314. jonjo finnegan said, on 26 May, 2007 at 6:23 pm

im gona try and get to the duddy fight tom ive heard jim rock has retired now tom is that right m8?

cracker monaghan v wright eh m8 was you there tom?

  315. Tom Podmore said, on 26 May, 2007 at 7:39 pm

I’d heard he’d retired but i don’t think he has; he is still in the running to fight Duddy on July 7. We’ll find out for sure on Tuesday. I hope he doesn’t as he has something left and it would be good if you could get your chance.

Will you still go for the Irish title regardless of his retirement?

I couldn’t make the Monaghan-Wright fight, but i got your text last Sunday morning and it made me even more disappointed about missing out. I’ve got the dvd now, however, and it’s a cracker, but its never the same as being there live. Monaghan is a real warrior; hope he doesn’t retire.

Tyrone Wright wants to drop down to super-middleweight and fight Neil Tidman for the Area title now. Be a good fight, if Tyrone can make the weight ok without becoming too weak.

Tidman is 100 per cent defending his title at the Leofric in September, so Pat Cowdell told me.

  316. jonjo finnegan said, on 28 May, 2007 at 7:54 pm

any idea who tidman has got tom?

  317. Tom Podmore said, on 29 May, 2007 at 12:08 pm

Provisionally it is going to be Simeon Cover.

As you know, Cover is a tricky, awkward Ingle-trained switcher. However, Simeon doesn’t like fighter who are strong and bully forward – like Tony Oakey did when they fought last year – and Neil is strong.

  318. jonjo finnegan said, on 29 May, 2007 at 12:32 pm

think i would still go for cover in that 1 tom.yes m8 it would be a dream to box in ireland for the irish title dont know where i stand with it now thow tell you the truth m8 i dont realy know whats going on with anything at the min regards boxing as ive had that many dates fall through on me.

if tyrone wright made supermiddle he would be absoulutley massive at 12stone and would be a real force but i would of thought he would struggle to do so.

  319. Tom Podmore said, on 29 May, 2007 at 12:43 pm

I was speaking to PJ this morning and he said he was going to put you on the Mutley-Bami bill, whenever that is. July, i think. Of course, you know more than me about when your fighting!

Wright would be a beast – thinks he’d KO Froch! Maybe not!!

  320. jonjo finnegan said, on 29 May, 2007 at 1:57 pm

sounds confident in himself tom cud’nt see that happening thow lol!yeh the mutley bami bill was mentioned then it was said i might be doing a 4rounder in dublin so we’ll av to wait and see m8 just wanna fight now thow even if its in a village hall sumwhere i dnt care im getting bored now.

  321. Russ L said, on 29 May, 2007 at 2:17 pm

What are the rules for fighting for the Irish titles? Do you just need Irish heritage, or how does it work?

Mutley vs Bami is going to be on a PJ card, then? So presumably it’ll be local?

    So many questions.

  322. Tom Podmore said, on 29 May, 2007 at 2:36 pm

Mutley-Bami will be a Matchroom promotion, although PJ and Errol will have a joint promotional standing. Nothing has been 100 per cent confirmed as of yet. That said, i know it all :)

Grandparents are the furthest you can go back. If it’s before that, however, you are not eligible. I’d be fine, as my Da is Irish.

  323. wilse said, on 29 May, 2007 at 7:47 pm

Can anyone confirm if the Simpkin-Lansdowne fight has bee postponed from 9th june?. If so this the second time it has been put back, it’s starting to become a bit of a joke, especially as the Midlands area heavyweight title has been vacant for how long? what sort of a way to run a championship is this. Did’nt Lansdowne pull out of a scheduled simpkin fight for the title last year?, ok rant over cheers.

  324. Tom Podmore said, on 30 May, 2007 at 8:57 am

Its 100 per cent off, mate. Scott Lansdowne and Lester Walsh both failed medicals and so they decided to scrap the show, even though it was a sell-out. I’m gutted as i was supposed to be going. What can you do, eh?

I believe it will happen in October, mind.

  325. wilse said, on 30 May, 2007 at 12:16 pm

failed medicals – jeez, how about a Simpkin – Butlin fight for the title?, bet Luke is well pissed off, double title and all that, it was a fight that I strongly believe he would have won.

  326. wilse said, on 30 May, 2007 at 1:53 pm

Tom, sorry to keep pesterin you, but I just read that Luke will be fighting john mcdermott at crystal palace on June 15th according to seconds out.com. Do you know owt about this mate?, c’mon Luke!!!!

  327. jonjo finnegan said, on 30 May, 2007 at 4:00 pm

do you know luke wilse?where you from m8?

  328. Tom Podmore said, on 30 May, 2007 at 5:25 pm

Luke may well be fighting John McDermott at Crystal Palace. That is a fight Luke could win. I don’t rate McDermott. I was planning on speaking to him in the next couple of days so i will find out for sure.

  329. wilse said, on 30 May, 2007 at 7:11 pm

Cheers Tom, much appreciated, I agree Luke Defo has a chance against Mcdermott.

I know of Luke and Decca well, but not on a personal level. I’m from Swad (horaay) and thats how I know of the simpkins really as they are well known and respected throught Swad, but currently live in Derby.

Jonjo, I met you in Swad that time outside spoonies to buy tickets for the Jamie Ambler fight, and also spoke to you down Derby (can’t remeber the name of the place) a few days after the Tidman fight.

  330. Russ L said, on 31 May, 2007 at 12:34 pm

What do we think of Gary Reid’s fight on that card? What are his chances?

Cheers Tom, by the way. You’re handy to have around, y’know. How far away does the official announcement of the details of Mutley vs Bami seem?

  331. Tom Podmore said, on 31 May, 2007 at 1:01 pm

I don’t think he has much of a chance. He is a good fighter – certainly – but Ajose is potentially a world-class operator. That will be the difference. Ajose should stop him before the mid-way point.

All should be announced in the next week or so, although it could be longer depending on venue arrangements. One thing that I can tell you for certain is that it will be taking place in July.

  332. Tom Podmore said, on 31 May, 2007 at 5:10 pm

Jonjo, i’ve been told that you may be fighting Mark Phillips for the vacant British Masters title soon. Any truth to the matter?

  333. jonjo finnegan said, on 31 May, 2007 at 5:38 pm

who told you that tom?yes it could happen m8 i was told it could be against 1 of three boxers they are phillips jamie ambler or leon owen id prefere to box owen or ambler id beat phillips but hes not good to box and malls and holds and is very dirty (hard 2 look good against althow phillips is made for me phillips says if he gets the fight he’s guna train his balls of for me which is good cus i want a good fight.id fancy stopping ambler or owen over ten.

realise who you are now wilse sound m8.

  334. Tom Podmore said, on 31 May, 2007 at 5:52 pm

I have my sources! Nah, just a rumour i’d heard. Hope it comes off for you mate, you have the ability to beat all three – and you’ve beaten two of them before. Really enjoyed your fight against Ambler. It’s a year ago, to the date at least, since you beat Mark Phillips.

When is it likely to happen, if it does happen?

  335. jonjo finnegan said, on 31 May, 2007 at 7:13 pm

lol!thought i was a boxing anorack tom your defo on par with me m8.

errol said burton in september which would be good did you see me when i beat phillips last time tom?yeh the ambler fight was o’k was’nt it.realy wana get busy and box regular ive told errol that today im one of those fighters who needs a focus and i tend to wonder off if im inactive errol knows that 2 lol!

  336. Tom Podmore said, on 31 May, 2007 at 7:57 pm

Excellent, Jonjo, i’ll make a note of that. The title is 100 per cent coming to Burton that night, whoever you end up facing! Owen is hard-hitting but fragile and you know the other two well.

I did see your fight with Phillips, you fought with a broken nose, didn’t you? Phillips did a lot of mauling when he got in close but, as i remember, you won well.

You had a busy year last year and could have done with the same this year but it hasnt turned out that way. Hopefully you’ll get out on the Mutley bill as a bit of a warm-up.

  337. Lee Jones said, on 31 May, 2007 at 11:19 pm

    Hmmm, good luck mister finnegan
reckon that scream thing could have legs y’know……haha

  338. jonjo finnegan said, on 31 May, 2007 at 11:52 pm

yeh my nose was busted tom beat him easy enough yeh that title is def coming to burton that night m8

lol!cheers lee good luck for your next fight m8.

  339. Lee Jones said, on 4 June, 2007 at 10:49 pm

well thats just the worst trash talk ever – try something like ‘dont get beat so bad that i dont get my chance to bash you’ something like that! haha!

  340. jonjo finnegan said, on 5 June, 2007 at 11:35 am

i was trying to lure you into a false sense of security so that i will def get my chance to bash you lol! who you got anyway nobody thats guna be 2 much of a hard nights work for you. i suppose nick okoth would be a good opponent 4 you as i only drew against him you could try and better me of that 1.

  341. Lee Jones said, on 6 June, 2007 at 8:49 pm

talking about maybe mark nielson, not too bothered at the mo – just wanna get a few fights under my belt to catch up with some of the old-timers who have around 15 fights behind em….haha

they said they will get mark phillips for me after you box him so thatll be a good indicator.

you got a match in wolves on the muttley bill?

  342. Sam the Man said, on 8 June, 2007 at 10:18 pm

Well what can i say. i have been reading all your comments, you guys talk a hell of a lot. One day i really hope to have a fight with James. I think it will be a really good fight. We both are eager and are good fighters (well i hope i am lol).

Boxing Davey Jones 28th. Well up for it. Bit disappointed with the last time i boxed so hope to do the job properly this time, like conception did to him. Training hard for it so hopefully it will pay off.

Looks like its gonna be a good show………and its only 3weeks away so hope you can all make it.

Reagrding the comment about Jon Foster that was a hard fight and i still believe its the hardest one to date. He was a brawler and man he cut my eye gud lol,but i give it my all and it paid off which is a bonus!!!

  343. Russ L said, on 9 June, 2007 at 7:07 am

How do Sam, cheers for coming on here.

  348. jonjo finnegan said, on 16 June, 2007 at 11:41 am

  349. Russ L said, on 16 June, 2007 at 11:58 am

  350. Tom Podmore said, on 22 June, 2007 at 8:28 am

Alrite lads, im back from my holiday in Kos. Just thought i’d let you know that the Ringside card on July 1 has been cancelled. It will now take place on July 13 at the Holiday Inn, Birmingham.

Sam, who are you fighting on the Dudley card, mate? I saw it was meant to be Davey Jones but he is fighting Bendall on the Mutley undercard.

  351. Sam the Man said, on 24 June, 2007 at 7:26 pm

hi there, iv just looked on britishboxing.net and saw the same but as far as i no its still Davey Jones.
cant wait for the fight now feel so ready for this. not to botherd who i fight as long as get in there to do my job and get a win.

  352. Tom Podmore said, on 25 June, 2007 at 8:53 am

Nice one, Sam. I tried to phone you up on Friday afternoon to do an interview with you for BBN but it said the number didnt exist. I’ll do one before your next fight, mind.

  353. jonjo finnegan said, on 25 June, 2007 at 1:02 pm

alright tom did you go to the bernard dunn fight i was in galway with my brother went to see my family for the wk end so i watched it on rte any idea what jim rock is doing now?

  354. Tom Podmore said, on 25 June, 2007 at 1:42 pm

I did go to the Dunne fight, yes. It was a good night and Dunne was a good winner. I’m going over to Duddy’s one too – you going to that? And i’ll also be at Dunne’s next one against Kiko Martinez.

Jim Rock is waiting for the right fight (John Duddy), if he cant get it then he will retire. He was at the last Ringside show – the dinner show on June 1 – but i never got round to speaking to him. I was about to when i started talking to Lee Jones and then he went.

  355. jonjo finnegan said, on 25 June, 2007 at 4:17 pm

im guna try and go tom looked a great night on telly did you get chance to watch limerick v tipp at the hurling cracking game i love the hurling me.i wanna shot at the irish title hope it comes soon.

  356. Tom Podmore said, on 25 June, 2007 at 4:28 pm

I didnt see that, no. My family are from Limerick so it would have been good to see. I’m a big hurley fan myself, although im an even bigger Gaelic football fan.

Hope you get that shot at the Irish title. Any more news about a Masters shot?

  357. jonjo finnegan said, on 25 June, 2007 at 9:50 pm

yes m8 ive got the shot errol is sorting a date out in september and letting me know this week dunno who im boxing for it yet thow.

i hear paul david has made an application to box tidman for the midland title in september although i hear matty hough might get the shot you heard anythin tom?

  358. Tom Podmore said, on 26 June, 2007 at 12:41 pm

Excellent news, Jonjo. You’ll get that title whoever you box out of Leon Owen, Jamie Ambler or Mark Phillips, although it may be agaisnt someone else.

Yes, Paul David is fighting Tidman for the Midland Area title in Coventry – on September 23, i think. David will beat Tidman, though. David is a beast and got a career best win against English champ Peter Haymer last time out.

Hough needs to box a six-threes, as you know, before he can get a shot at Tidman, and i dont think Matty has done that yet. He’d give it a good go but Hough would lose to Tidman.

  359. Eye Candy said, on 27 June, 2007 at 11:46 am

    Heh heh.

Nice one Sam, if you come back on here – that jab of yours was looking strong.

  365. Sam the Man said, on 30 June, 2007 at 2:19 pm

thanks m8 cheers, had to work the long jab of mine was well plsd with the fight not even got a mark on me.
ernie is one tough guy he just takes the shots to his face he must be made of steel me left knuccles was killing as fight went on from just bouncing of his nose.
Thanks to everyone who came and watched was a good show.

  367. jonjo finnegan said, on 2 July, 2007 at 5:43 pm

i see lee jones lost how did you find the fight lee you want the return?

  368. Russ L said, on 2 July, 2007 at 7:13 pm

Blimey, yeah. I’ve only just seen that. I didn’t even know Lee was due to fight up north.

  369. Tom Podmore said, on 3 July, 2007 at 10:42 am

He took the fight at 24 hours notice. Give a good account of himself and Lee thinks he deserved the nod. He gets the return in September. I’m sure Lee will fill the rest of the blanks for you later.

  370. jonjo finnegan said, on 3 July, 2007 at 9:00 pm

fair play to him taking it at that notice shows he is always training in in decent shape.

looking forward to tidman v paul david tom i think david might strugle to make 12stone.

  371. Tom Podmore said, on 4 July, 2007 at 9:04 am

I am, too. I’ve been doing the preview for it in the last couple of days – i always do them months before – and i put that David will struggle to make weight. The closest he has ever come to the 12-stone limit is 12st 4lbs he weighed agaisnt Stevie McGuire in his second contest.

McGuire has fought both and i’ve been told that Tidman pushed him closer than David. However, i think that David, if he can make the weight ok, will probably beat Neil.

  372. Lee Jones said, on 4 July, 2007 at 6:02 pm

No excuses – shit happens as they say
Wouldnt box for that promoter again however as I was messed around from start to finish
September 21st ill be putting things right guys

  373. WolvesLad said, on 4 July, 2007 at 9:13 pm

you will lee im sure of that, all the best for 21st sept !

  374. Tom Podmore said, on 7 July, 2007 at 11:55 am

Jonjo, Tidman isn’t defending his Midland Area title in Coventry on September 22, Les Allen told me the card for that date and he isn’t on it.

However, i was speaking to Pat Cowdell and he said he might put that fight on at the Burlington Hotel, Birmingham on October 6. Been told that Hamed Jamali is in the running too.

Any news / date when your out next?

  375. Russ L said, on 8 July, 2007 at 7:35 am

    Sam’s on the telly!

Well, not really, but sort of.

  376. WolvesLad said, on 8 July, 2007 at 3:06 pm

ha ha ha , well done sam

  377. jonjo finnegan said, on 8 July, 2007 at 4:32 pm

alright tom im boxing for the masters title on september 22nd at burton.

tidman will beat jamali and pat knows jamali inside out as you know what happened with paul david m8.

  378. Tom Podmore said, on 9 July, 2007 at 8:45 am

I don’t know what’s happening about David – i might give him or Dominic Ingle a call later and see what’s going on. I still think he’s in the running but so are a few people. Mick Monaghan want’s a crack too.

Good news about the title shot, mate. I expect Duane and Carl will make their debuts on that card. I’ll give all three of you a ring nearer to the fight.

  379. jonjo finnegan said, on 9 July, 2007 at 5:04 pm

alright tom did you get my text today about bami pulling out on mutley errol rang me early this morn to say that mutley is now boxing colin lynes for the british and european titles so still a very good fight mutley is still my pick.

yeh good news with the fight for me m8 start upping things in the gym now its been confirmed.

monaghan v tidman would be good id love to fight the winner thoght mick had packed up new he would’nt stay away for long good old pro fair play to him.

  380. Tom Podmore said, on 10 July, 2007 at 8:28 am

I did get your text message, yeah. I think Mutley will beat Lynes. Colin is a brave kid, has long arms and can counter-punch well, but he will never faced anyone as strong as Mutley – and that includes when he fought Junior Witter.

Mick is fighting in Mansfield on July 22 in a six-round warm-up and then maybe that title oppurtunity. It would be a good fight and Mick is a crafty bastard; i wouldnt put it past him to win that.

    What do you think?

  381. Eye Candy said, on 10 July, 2007 at 4:48 pm

Jonjo are u fighting mark phillips?

  382. jonjo finnegan said, on 11 July, 2007 at 10:11 pm

its supposed to be on he’s not the nicest guy in the world to fight is he holding and mauling all the time a couple of other names have been mentioned 2 but it will more than lightly be phillips.

  383. jonjo finnegan said, on 11 July, 2007 at 10:14 pm

allright tom think id prob go for mick in that 1 might just outwork tidman a bit allthow its a very hard 1 to call and styles make fight as they say.

  384. jonjo finnegan said, on 23 July, 2007 at 2:32 pm

still in shock with the mutley result.

  385. Tom Podmore said, on 23 July, 2007 at 3:39 pm

So am i, Jonjo. Really thought Mutley would do it, but you have to take your hat off to Colin Lynes, who executed a near faultless game-plan and hardly took a clean punch all night.

Mutley needs to get himself back up to welterweight. He seemed to have little or no snap in his punches, it wasn’t the Mutley i’d seen destroying all comers at light-welterweight a few years back.

However, Marcus Portman put in the performance of the night for me and boxed like a demon against Matolcsi. I thought Marcus would win but not as emphatically as he did. Great stuff.

  386. Russ L said, on 23 July, 2007 at 5:37 pm

I almost wish I could say it took the sting out of me not being there, but it wouldn’t be true. Gutting.

What are the chances of Mut fighting at full welter from now on, then? Is he amenable to the idea?

And (changing the subject entirely) is there any sort of juicy story behind Maloney deciding he doesn’t want to do the Elcock fight anymore?

It’s another Russ L Questioning Post.

  387. Tom Podmore said, on 23 July, 2007 at 6:10 pm

Frank wanted to be in Paris the same night – David Haye challenges for the WBC cruiserweight title against Jean-Marc Mormeck – and decided to hand the purse bids back. However, Maloney has told me he may bid again when the purse bids come around on August 8.

Although Sky have admitted they don’t want to show Howard Eastman on Sky Sports anymore. He hasn’t got the most crowdpleasing style. That said, i like watching him grinding his opponents to a halt with ‘Chinese water torture’ shots.

  388. Tom Podmore said, on 18 August, 2007 at 11:55 am

Jonjo, are you still fighting Mark Phillips next month? I’ll give you a call in the next couple of weeks so i can do an interview.

  389. wilse said, on 18 August, 2007 at 8:06 pm

How’s the training going jonjo?. Are you selling tickets for your next fight?, If so i’ll give you a bell in a week or so and arrange to buy a few if thats ok?.

  390. Tom Podmore said, on 19 August, 2007 at 8:42 am

You going to Leicester on October 6, Wilse? It looks a decent card, what with Paul Butlin, Kevin Concepcion and Simon Fleck (both of whom Jonjo boxed in the amateurs) on the bill.

  391. Russ L said, on 19 August, 2007 at 8:51 am

Is the Ringside 21st card still happening? It seems to have disappeared from the BBN listings. Have they cancelled/moved it like the last one?

  392. Tom Podmore said, on 19 August, 2007 at 11:19 am

I do the schedules for BBN now (i have been promoted :) and i took it off yesterday. Ken told me it is likely to be on the same night as Elcock-Eastman, although will probably happen at the Holiday Inn or National Motorcycle Museum.

Its not competition why its on the same night – although some may see it as that – its just that its the only date they can take in that month and they went the likes of Tommy Owens, Tommy Costello and Eddie McIntosh out as much as possible.

  393. Russ L said, on 19 August, 2007 at 1:19 pm

Ah right, cheers for that. Am I to assume the new version will definitely be a dinner show, then? Boo sucks.

For a promotion so closely affiliated with The Villa Leisure Centre, Ringside seem pretty crap at actually getting a show on there lately.

  394. Tom Podmore said, on 19 August, 2007 at 2:43 pm

If its at the Motorcycle Museum, which i could well be, then it will be an open show.

The Leisure Centre has shut-down, by the way. Besides, Ringside left the Aston Villa Events Centre in June. They are based in Witton now.

  395. Russ L said, on 19 August, 2007 at 2:59 pm

Oh right. That would explain a lot, then.

You aren’t half handy to have around, Tom.

  396. jonjo finnegan said, on 19 August, 2007 at 5:34 pm

alright wilse yes mate ive got all the tickets and there going well m8 so give me a call anytime m8 no probs have you still got my number?

alright tom how are you m8 yes still got phillips and trainings going well give me a call anytime m8.

Podmore is officially the eyes and ears of boxing in the west midlands !

  398. wilse said, on 19 August, 2007 at 7:07 pm

Alright Tom,?, unfortionatley I can’t make the leicester bill on the 6th due to work, So if Butlin is fighting at leicester, do you know if he is fighting on the 22nd of Sept at Burton?, BBN have removed him from the schedule where as on Boxrec he is still on the bill, I presumed he pulled out injured.

Do you know anything about the bill on the 21st at Burton Tom?, it’s showing up on the boxrec schedules. Hopefully a great weekend of boxing comming up.

Jonjo, I still have your number so I will give you a bell next week if thats ok?, just confirming who’s going etc.

  399. Tom Podmore said, on 20 August, 2007 at 1:06 pm

Wilse – look at BBN’s schedules page, as Boxrec just copy from ours and then put the wrong one’s up there!

Adie Whitmore, Dean Harrison, Shane Junior (a HUGE puncher from Cov who hasn’t fought since 1999), Carl Groombridge (maybe), Duane Parker and Jonjo are fighting in Burton. Will be a good night.

Butlin was originally due to fight in Burton but was dropped because he doesn’t sell many tickets. It costs loads to put him on and he’s not selling anything so it doesn’t make good business sense.

Jonjo – Yeah, im all good, mate. Yourself? I’m over in Ireland at the moment – came over to Limerick last night to see some family – and going to the Dunne fight on Saturday.

I’ll give you a call next week, when I’ve comeback from Ireland. I’ve got a new number – I think I may have text you it – so it wont be from the one I’ve contacted you with in the past.

  400. wilse said, on 20 August, 2007 at 7:11 pm

Cheers Tom, that figures now, shame abot Butlin was looking forward to seeing him box, still as you say will be a good night.

Jonjo – I’ fine ta mate, I’ve not got your new number so as you say I’ll hear from you next week then, all the best.

It was a good win for Billy Smith considering the change of opponent, credit to Carl Allen for been fit enough to stand in.

Just found ot that Luke Simpkin Stopped Billy Bessey in the 6th at Plymouth yesterday. Did anyone get to see the fight?. This is a great win for Luke who unusually got stopped in his last two outings against John Mcdermott and David Dolan.

  411. wilse said, on 17 September, 2007 at 4:02 pm

Saying that I thought Billy Bessey was due to fight David Ingleby. Luke must have took the fight at short notice. It makes it hard to follow him when he takes fights at a moments notice.

Afternoon all. I’ve been busy with one thing or another recently, hence my lack of activity. However, im back, going to Burton tomorrow night and will be knocking a ton of stuff out on BBN over the coming weeks – including a preview for tomorrow nights card.

Jonjo, tell me what you and Phillips weighed-in at if you get on here between now and the fight.

  417. Tom Podmore said, on 21 September, 2007 at 12:13 pm

Cheers, Jonjo. I thought it was for the super-middleweight title, my mistake. I was thinking only the other day that Mark hadnt seen 12-stone since about 2002.

    Good luck tonight.

  418. Russ L said, on 21 September, 2007 at 12:53 pm

It’s only reading Tom’s preview just now (literally just now) that I realise that Phillips is the lad you fought on the Mutley-Anderson undercard (I know, I’m thick). That’s promising – I remember him looking like he had a pretty awkward style to fight against but I have no doubt you’ll sort him given an extra six rounds to play with.

  419. Tom Podmore said, on 22 September, 2007 at 7:57 am

Jonjo, mate, you were robbed blind last night. I had you a 97-94 winner and couldnt believe that Terry O’Connor raised Phillips’ hand.

    Unlucky, Jonjo.

Was it that bad, then? I can’t comment on the fight since I wasn’t there myself, and I’m certainly not claiming to be any sort of refereeing or judging expert, but this isn’t exactly the first time that O’Connor’s officiating has been called into question.

    Jonjo,
You were unlucky not to get the nod the other night mate, hope your not doing yourself down over it, try and keep busy. Your a dexterous boxer, still young and trains hard with a passion for the sport, who will definatley come again and win lose or draw still have a large passionate following who are all aware that you remain a raw threat to the top level.

    Alrite Tom?
Nice piece you wrote on Butlin, tough match he’s got comming up, he talks a good fight, about midlands area and other domestic belts. Personally I think he will struggle for the midlands area scalp let alone any other honours.

Someone uploaded a clip on You tube of the final round of Butlin v Simpkin, although I did’nt see the previous 3 rnds I don’t think it would have been a bad decision if Luke got the nod based on what I saw in the last round, for saying he stepped in at late notice he gave Butlin a good argument.

As for the Midlands area title, I emailed Les Potts the other day, out of curiosity, regards the state of this title and why it has been vacant for so long ( since Krence held it) and he basically said because there are not enough boxers at HW to compete for and defend the title. Obviously the only viable matchup is Simpkin -Butlin, I hope it does happen, give Luke plenty of notice for a fight of this magnitude against butlin, luke will put him into early retirement IMO, besides butlin is no where near active enough, and only seems to want to fight in the local area.

  427. Tom Podmore said, on 4 October, 2007 at 5:11 pm

It is a very tough match for Paul on Saturday, your right. I think he will struggle against Ellis in Leicester (i’m really looking forward to seeing that fight, by the way) as Matthew has a bit of pop in his gloves, has very, very quick hands and is skilful.

Regarding the Butlin-Simpkin fight in Burton – Luke won the last round clearly for me but i had Paul winning rounds one and three big and shading the second. But, as you say, Luke came in at the last minute and gave an excellent account of himself.

As you said, Paul is likely to fight Simpkin for the vacant Area title in the next couple of months, and that promised to be another real cracker.

I list every active Midland or Midland-based boxer – in order of where i think they should be placed – and here is the list of active heavyweights:

    1. Pele Reid (Birmingham) 19-4-2 (17)
    2. Paul Butlin (Melton Mowbray) 11-3-0 (2)
    3. Luke Simpkin (Swandlicote) 10-28-3 (8)
    4. Chris Woollas (Epworth) 18-36-8 (8)
    5. Alex Ibbs (Stoke) 2-0-0 (0)
    6. Istvan Kecskes (Wolverhampton) 3-21-1 (2)

So you are right – it’s likely to be Simpkin-Butlin II. However, i still think Paul’s better boxing skills would nullify Luke’s bigger hitting (mainly because Simpkin has a lot of self-doubt).

That said, Simpkin’s power could cancel everything out.

  428. wilse said, on 4 October, 2007 at 8:05 pm

I agree with what yor saying Tom. When you put like that it makes me wonder what Les Potts is on about?. There are enough boxers at HW to compete for the belt, give Ibbs a few more bouts and he to will soon be a legit contender.

What time do the doors open at Leicester mate do you know?.

Interesting what you said about Simpkins self doubt , was never really aware of it TBH, does he do himself down alot then?.

  429. Tom Podmore said, on 5 October, 2007 at 9:59 am

The doors open at seven – the boxing should, all being well, start at around eight. It Promises to be a good night.

Simpkin spent a lot of time with Nobby – so has a journeyman’s mentality at times. The best example of this would be when he fought the twenty-two-stone Carl Baker in Nottingham for the British Masters title in 2005.

Luke had pulled off a career-best victory over Carl two fights previously, stopping him in four. But in this fight he did a lot of holding and not punching, almost like he didn’t have the confidence or belief to attack and look for a repeat win.

He has strange performances like that.

  430. wilse said, on 5 October, 2007 at 9:10 pm

    Yeah see your point.

I was there at kirkby when he fought Baker, like you said Tom, the first few rounds were a bit dodgy holding going down on one knee etc, I think his confidence was rocked cos Baker put him down with a hook in one of the early rounds, can’t remember which, but as the fight wore on Simpkin grew in confidence and had Baker on the retreat, I alongside with many others disagreed with John Keanes score of 99-98, there was a lot of booing going on when Baker got presented the belt.

Apparentley prior to that fight Luke had been sparring Tim Witherspoon.

  431. wilse said, on 5 October, 2007 at 9:17 pm

Keanes score was 95-94, sos it’s the beer!

  432. Tom Podmore said, on 6 October, 2007 at 7:47 am

I remember seeing a dvd of Luke smashing Carl Baler to bits in four rounds in their first fight – i think it was in Leeds, where i will soon be living.

As I’ve previously alluded to, he will put in a career-best performance like that then will go into his shell against someone like Mickey Steeds, who decked and halted Luke in the first fight and then easily outpointed him in a rematch.

Odd – especially when you carry the concusive power Simpkin does.

How do you fancy Luke’s chances against undefeated Sam Sexton, 5-0 (1), next Saturday?

  433. Tom Podmore said, on 6 October, 2007 at 8:47 am

Just been told that Matthew Ellis has pulled out of his fight with Paul Butlin in Leicester tonight.

Sadly, Paul hasn’t been able to find an opponent to step into the breach and is off the bill.

anyone going to Notts tonight ?
    K x

  435. wilse said, on 6 October, 2007 at 7:48 pm

Shame about the Butlin fight, does’nt have much look does he?.

Mickey Steeds is a tough lad though Tom, ex southern area Champ got a good record which consists of top(ish) domestic operators, soon to be fighting Troy Ross for the commonwelth strap at cruiser. Was gutted with the Simpkin – Steeds result after the first match as Steeds was relatively unknown, but he must hit hard, not many people put Luke on the deck, but the second fight shows that Luke improved and it was after Steeds failed attempt for the British title against Gammer, Luke is IMO in the domestic title mix up defo.

As for the Sexton match coming up, it’s hard to say, obviously would like Luke to win. Sam is the better boxer with a good amateur pedigree, both men have common denominators in Paul King and Istevan Kecskes, Sexton winning both on points over 6 and 4 rnds respectively, while Luke lost against Kingy over 6 and beat Kecskes over 4, so 2 nil to Sam.

In Lukes favour he is much more experienced can bang and loves a brawl and I don’t know if Sam has a good chin or not, so I guess that makes it about even.

Oh yeah, I used to live in norwich and I think the folk are a bit odd – no offense, I can say that can’t I, think everyone on here is from the mids, Lol!!, so I’m quite biased!!.

Not going Notts tonight Twinkle, staying in watchin the Khan fight, been doing overtime today so I’m knackered, have a gud un if your going.

I’ve just read that bit about Martin Gethin and Dean Harrison heading to Vegas. That really is amazing. How long has that been in the planning stages?

Calzaghe by decision for the weekend, I think.

  445. Tom Podmore said, on 1 November, 2007 at 9:47 am

They are not on the Hatton-Mayweather undercard, by the way. That was my mishearing of things on a poor signal on the mobile yesterday afternoon (I was driving at the time). They are boxing in Las Vegas the day before, however.

That will be a UK vs Mexico Contender card. Hennessy Sports boxers – Carl Froch – if he comes through unscathed against Robin Reid next Friday (can’t wait to go to Nottingham for that) Lee Meager, John O’Donnell etc – and Harrison and Gethin of First Team will box in that at the MGM Grand the night before Hatton-Mayweather.

The above hasn’t been released as of yet, so a bit of an exclusive for this site!

The re-jigged piece is here: http://www.britishboxing.net/news_2813-BBN-Exclusive-First-Team-Boxers-get-Vegas-Chance.html

Kessler, the stronger, fresher, harder-punching fighter, is going to tear Calzaghe apart. Calzaghe’s southpaw, fast-handed style will do well for the first half, but Mikkel will take over and stop Joe by the eleventh.

I’ve had a nice £50 bet on it at 33/1.

Frochy, however, would batter both of them if he ever got his chance.

  446. Jay K said, on 1 November, 2007 at 12:48 pm

    calzaghe and hatton FTW!!!!!

  447. Russ L said, on 1 November, 2007 at 8:29 pm

English, please. I think we’ve put up with enough in this thread already.

Tom – I suppose it all seemed a bit too good to be true. Still, a great opportunity for them both nonetheless. I hope they do well.

Who have you (and everyone else) got for Haye vs Mormec and Hatton vs Mayweather? Sadly (and I do mean sadly) Calzaghe is the only Brit I’d pick to win in the three upcoming big fights. I’d love nothing more than for all three of them to come away victorious, obviously, but I can’t see it.

  448. Tom Podmore said, on 2 November, 2007 at 12:59 pm

Mormeck is susceptible to a heavy puncher, but he has the experience to ride out an early storm from Haye. I just get this feeling that Haye, although he will disagree, with load-up too much in the early stages – hence decreasing the potency of his power.

It happened against my old mate Carl ‘The Cat’ Thompson and I think Haye will get stopped around the seven or eight-round mark. Mormeck’s stamina isnt too good, however, but neither is Haye’s.

This is his first folly into world-class. Mormeck has been around this class for four or five years now and, with the exception of the first Bell fight and the Virgil Hill rematch, has looked good in all his defences.

As I have previously alluded to, Mormeck is a wise old fox and is a fighter with a decent chin, good skills, decent workrate and concusive one-punch KO power. But If Haye can catch him early, and there is always a chance, then he has a shot.

I also think that his titanic struggle to get down to cruiserweight will decrease his power. Hopefully I’ll be proved wrong for the millionth time.

  449. Tom Podmore said, on 2 November, 2007 at 1:07 pm

I think Mayweather could, in theory, stop Hatton – with the sheer volume of the American’s punches wearing the Englishman down.

Really hope Hatton can do it, however. Although i am more of a Junior Witter fan, I’ve met Ricky loads of times (he knows me by face now) but he shows to much face in the ring, will probably march in and is likely to walk onto hundreds of stinging fast-handed attacks from Floyd.

People are using the first Castillo-Mayweather fight as a blue-print for Hatton – backing Mayweather onto the ropes, cutting of the ring and working the body when he’s in the corners – but its easier said than done.

I had Mayweather winning the first Castillo fight and have never understood the fuss that “Castillo was robbed.” Mayweather, a defensive genius, used a rolling shoulder, took most of the shots on the gloves and arms, though did feel some of the body shots.

Hatton definitely has a chance if he can slip inside and work away to the abdomen. But its America – so the referee will break up any in-fighting as soon as it happens.

However, with all that said, I reckon Hatton – better defensively than is sometimes given credit and a better boxer – will pull of a shock victory.

  450. Russ L said, on 2 November, 2007 at 2:02 pm

I must admit that I’ve never seen the reason for the controversy about Mayweather vs Castillo I, either. Or the supposed controversy about Mayweather vs De La Hoya, for that matter.

Sorry to cross-contextualisalisalise, but on Boxing Banter thee says (regarding the Rojac card):

“there will be an after-show party in which we can all get plastered at the Medicine bar.

    What, really?

  451. Tom Podmore said, on 2 November, 2007 at 2:54 pm

People who don’t understand boxing would have scored the fights to Castillo and De La Hoya on the basis of them being the more aggressive fighter. It doesn’t work out like that.

Scoring shots are those with the knuckle part of the glove. Mayweather, as i have previously said, seldom takes a clean punch and is incredibly accurate with his own reposts.

The plan was to have it at the Medicine Bar, though things, as i’m sure you are aware, change very quickly.

There will be an after-show party, however. But I’ll found out from Jon where it’s definitely going to take place at the gym tonight.

Unfortionatley Jonjo was involved in a head-on collision while returning from training one evening, it sounds like a big crash, police say he survived beacause he was wearing a seatbelt, his car is wrote off and he sustained a broken wrist, – lets just hope he can carry on boxing.

  464. Tom Podmore said, on 15 November, 2007 at 10:21 am

WolvesLad, here is the link: http://www.britishboxing.net/news_2871-Jonjo-Finnegan-in-car-crash.html

PJ phoned me yesterday to tell me about one thing or another and said that a 70-year-old man got confused, drove the wrong up the motorway and had a head-on crash with Jonjo at 70mph.

  465. wilse said, on 15 November, 2007 at 9:10 pm

BOXER Jonjo Finnegan has vowed to fight again after almost losing his life in a horrific motorway smash.

The 27-year-old says he is lucky to be alive today after being involved in a head-on smash with a car being driven the wrong way down the M42 by an 84-year-old man.

Jonjo was returning to his Newhall home after training in West Bromwich when the smash happened near Tamworth at 8pm on Monday.

The 84-year-old, who was driving a courtesy car on wrong side of the motorway, clipped a BMW before careering straight into Jonjo’s vehicle, which was travelling at 70mph.

Jonjo was taken to the George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton with a broken right wrist and big toe and required 12 stitches to a head wound and nine in his knee. The pensioner was shaken but not injured.

Jonjo said: “I’d had a good training session and was travelling back when I suddenly saw the glare of headlights coming towards me.

“I swerved and there was a huge bang. That is the last thing I remember before the ambulance came. I feel lucky to be alive – it could have been a very different story.”

The crash came weeks before the light-middleweight, of Dalston Road, Newhall, was due to fight for the British Masters title against Welshman Jamie Ambler – a boxer that he has previously beaten – at Burton’s Meadowside Leisure Centre on November 29.

Jonjo, who returned from a week’s training in Tenerife on Friday, said that he was in the best physical condition of his life before the crash. His bout with Ambler has now been cancelled.

The hard-hitter told The Mail he was ‘gutted’ at having to miss the fight – but has vowed the crash will not provide a knockout blow to his career.

He said: “Before the crash I was in the shape of my life and was confident that I was going to win the fight. It was a big opportunity for me and I am gutted I will miss it.

“However, I am going to come back and win that title for the town. I have great support from the people of Burton and I am going to do this for them.

“It is a massive test of character for me – and I will not be found wanting.”

The father-of-one will soon be told by doctors how long he will have to spend in hospital. His aim is to be fit enough to travel to see his hero Ricky Hatton fight Floyd Mayweather for the World Welterweight Championship in Las Vegas on December 8.

Jonjo’s parents, Gill and John, who live in Newhall, believe their son will bounce back bigger and stronger than ever.

Mum Gill said: “It has been a traumatic few days. He is lucky to still be here and it shows you never know what is around the next corner. He is a very courageous person and is so devoted to boxing.

“Jonjo has now got to get better and get stronger. He has great support from his family and friends, and he will box again, you can be sure of that.”
